2112: The Voices
in the end of the entire 2112 sequence (all of side A on vinyl i think) the voices "ATTENTION PEOPLE OF EARTH. WE HAVE ASSUMED CONTROL".... are those the Priests of Syrinx, or the returning people of Earth?
THIS BUILDING'S TOTALLY BURNING DOWN!
Ahhhhh...the oft debated question of who had assumed control.
Or was it:
"Attention all people of the Solar Federation!
Attention all people of the Solar Federation!
Attention all people of the Solar Federation!
We have consumed cheese.
We have consumed cheese.
We have consumed cheese?"
Anyhow, I say it was the taking of the story full circle. The story starts out with Anonymous's journal, in which we hear of the Priests talking control in 2062. Then we find out all of what happened to him. It appears to me that the voice is that of the Priests coming to us now. Now we have to live under that extreme socialistic society that Jon and Anonymous lived (and Anon died) under. Just my thoughts, and I may be wrong.
Other opinions?

The Solar Federation is the vehicle for the ruling Priests I think. But to answer your question in the end it is the elder race returning to assume control.
Something I just noticed, when the Priests took control it was an interplanetary revolution. I thought that after the Soliloquy where Anonymous kills himself that it was fast-forwarding to when the elder race returns as he imagined they would in Oracle: The Dream.

The way I imagined it is they drop out of hyper-space or whatever form of travel they've devised and broadcast to the planets that they've assumed control. That would be a very large coup to stage for the resistance fighters, it doesn't seem plausible to me. But then again, things get lax after 50 years of peace.

There's nothing to denote the timeline throughout the piece, so they could have come back any number of years after that, possibly centuries, or it couldn't have happened at all. Remember, in The Dream he imagined them growing stronger to take their home back, that would take quite awhile.
With Anonymous dead, our storyteller, the ending is completely open to interpretation. That's one of the more logical assumptions with what we're given though.
As Geddy said, the conceptual work is very nebulous.

i always liked to think of it as the Priests continuing their oppression. don't knwo why just seems more dramaticle that way. he fights for freedom and in the end they just assume control again. and it's lost.
"John Rutsey, who was a viking then, Geddy, who wasn't a viking and myself formed the band as it isn't today to patrol war-torn areas of the Middle-East and to incurr as many debts as possible. This we did with a passion."

i think they are reporting it because of the recent misshaps caused by Anonymous, letting everyone know once agian they have oppressed and are in control.
