Soldiers - Are They Heroes?

I've been watching a debate going on in a Facebook group called "Soldiers are not heroes". The group is against the "hero-worship" of people in the Armed Forces. As you can imagine, some have joined simply to call group members names and say that they don't know anything about being a soldier.

What do you think? Are soldiers heroes?

I have a great deal of respect for anyone who answers a call to a cause greater than themselves.

"No greater love hath any man than one who would lay down his life for a friend." It is an awesome thing in my eyes when a person would put him/her self in harm's way on behalf of another.

The fight selflessly, for their country so nobodies can voice their opinion about how terrible they are, if thats not being a hero, I don't know what is. They obviously aren't doing it for thanks or satisfaction, as they will get neither.

It sucks they don't get the thank they deserve. I mean they do, but it's not always real sincere. I don't think they are all heroes, but a hell of a lot of them are.

I agree they aren't all heroes because I know that there are those who do horrible things to innocent people on purpose. Those are the rare few, though.

The way I see it is that anyone who would choose to put himself in a position to die in order to secure my freedoms is a hero.

I don't agree with the war BUT how could you not commend someone for risking their life (or giving it) for the country they love? If they're not heroes, then WHO IS?

I'm still watching the debate and it's getting hot. Actually, it was hot when I found it.

Some are saying that soldiers are not heroes because they invade other countries and participate in senseless bloodshed. They put their morals away for a while when they go to war and become legal murderers, showing no mercy and extreme brutality.

Others say they are heroes, using the "they fight for our freedom" line. They protect this country from the ones who want to destroy it, putting their lives on the line so you don't have to.

Funny thing is, all those calling the soldiers "Legal Murderers" and such are the pants shitters of the world that abuse their freedoms given to them by those same murders. Ain't free speech a bitch???

Damned right they're heroes.

It just goes to show how ass-backwards we are as a country - when the
mainstream media would rather glorify Michael Jackson's DUBIOUS death
every day for two weeks straight - than the ultimate sacrifices of our
brave troops ON A DAILY BASIS.

This is rediculous.

The group should be grateful that they have the RIGHT to print and
spew their bravo sierra.

They should get a clue, swallow their foolish pride and thank the troops
for protecting their right to say the stupid shit they say.

This group is intended to point out the absurdity of the many groups on Facebook that portray all soldiers to be heroes and shower the armed forces with unconditional praise.

Putting on a soldiers uniform does not make you a hero.

Supporters of the group generally agree that the wars that our armed forces are participating in at the present time and in recent years are unnecessary and unjust. Therefore we don't feel that we should be pressured into offering "support" to people fighting and killing innocent people for causes that we don't believe in.

We recognise that the government are mainly to blame but also think that members of the forces need to take responsibility for their own actions in choosing to support these causes. Soldiers have free will and the opportunity to not sign/re-sign up if they feel they are being asked to participate in an unjust war, so they also deserve a proportion of the blame if they choose to stay.

We also find it amusing how so many of those who claim to "protect our freedoms of speech" tell us to shut up, or be duffed up.

Soldiers are not heroes. They can be heroes, they can act heroically, they can do heroic things - but the act of putting on a uniform and agreeing to put your conscience in a lockbox for the next so many years does not make your life more important than others, it does not make your opinions and insights more worthy of respect than others, it does not exempt you from moral judgement. It does not make you a hero.

And we should not fall prey to hero-worship.?

The odd thing is, those who think soldiers ARE heroes are insulting and threatening this group (the description does not lie, I saw it), whereas the group members aren't stooping to such a low level.

They travel miles in the heat....

They risk their lives crossing a border....

They don't get paid enough wages....

They do jobs that others won't do or are afraid to do....

Im like Xan here..I really dont agree with war...would absolute hate it if my kids joined the army..being honest...but the ones that do.. are they heroes..yes..for definate they are

but then again so are firemen, policemen, nurses, doctors...in my eyes many occupations are heroes..just a pity-dont know about the american soldiers- but the british ones are getting treated like shit...not from the general public but from the government..then again the nurses and firemen here get treated like shit as well...
