Here is a review of the movie that I found:
METAL: A HEADBANGER'S JOURNEY * * *
Directed by Sam Dunn, Scot McFayden, Jessica Joy Wise. (14A) 97 min. Opens Feb 24.
Evil and educational, this Canadian-made tribute to the heaviest of music contains a wealth of surefire conversation starters at your next social occasion. Here are my four favourites. No. 1: Geddy Lee thinks Blue Cheer was the first heavy metal band, while Lemmy favours Deep Purple. No. 2: Black Sabbath used the symbol of the cross to protect themselves from the forces of darkness, not to attract them. No. 3: Medieval Christians deemed the tritone -- the musical interval used in such songs as Metallica's "Enter Sandman" -- "the devil in music." And No. 4: Ronnie James Dio is no larger than the average garden gnome.
An unrepentant 'banger who grew up to be a bona fide anthropologist, Sam Dunn acts as the audience's eager tour guide. He can't disguise his excitement as he travels to the metal world's meccas and interviews its venerated pioneers, modern-day innovators and a guy named Necrobutcher. Though Dunn and the other filmmakers struggle to pack three decades worth of history, controversy and contradiction into 90-odd minutes -- the notoriously twisted Norwegian scenes certainly merit a fuller treatment -- Metal: A Headbanger's Journey succeeds as both an insightful exercise in cultural studies and an exhilarating tribute to rock's dark side. And yes, it rocks with the strength of 10 men. JA
