As for the ears, I think they are cute with the ears down, too, but with the ears up I think they look tough, and a bit like Spock.
hehe
An adult dobe with floppy ears just looks silly to me. I guess because I was raised around show dogs and they all had their ears up. I love the way they express themselves with their cropped ears. They stand them up straight, they hold them out flat, they put them down, all sorts of fun poses.

Gorgeous puppy!!!
She looks so noble.
I have to admit, though that I prefer the ears down too. To me cropping them is like forcing a trait on the breed that it doesn't posses naturally. But I don't raise those show dogs either and so therefore can not speak knowledgebly about it and I can understand why they're cropped.

Freeze this moment a little bit longer...
Why they are cropped: well, it started out that Herr Dobermann cropped the ears of the dogs who were the start of the breed. Many people crop now because he did.
Some people crop to stave off ear infections saying that the way the ear hangs isn't natural and the risk of infection is higher if you do not crop. There are vets who will tell you that there is no significant chance of ear infections and there are vets who will tell you there is.
When I was a kid my mom worked with a vet who is known for his work with Dobes and he said he saw infections in Dobes who did not get their ears cropped, and I've always kept that in the back of my mind.
Even if there isn't a much greater chance, I figure there is some sense to the possibility of a greater chance and, well, I did have my sons circumsized because of the chance that they might get an infection on their schmekel if we left the foreskin, even though I have only known one guy who got an infection.
