I don't see the purpose of the other 2 necks in that really, the open chords seem needless

The purpose? The show is the reason. Much of what Vai does is for the show, pure and simple.

He thought he used them both extensively. He made them useful. I'd like to try the fretless thing someday, like the bottom neck.

It was kind of neat when he was playing the part during the song on the synthy 12 stringer but that seems more just a trick than improved playing to me, not that he is not a stellar player or anything.

I would have described it as showmanship rather than a trick. :) It made the audience happy. That's important stuff. :)

I just read this and a thought popped into my head. If you leave all three setups of pickups on- the guitar would vibrate sympathetically and would make a massive chorus-y sound.

Does anybody remember Michael Angelo and the band Nitro? He played a 4 neck guitar.

Here's Nitro doing "Freight Train Coming" with Angelo using the 4 neck. It's a music vid, so it's dubbed, but I saw him play it live and for real years ago.
