The difference may be the introduction to drugs. When the Beatles had this original hit of theirs that was used as the backdrop music for this tune, they hadn't been introduced to the width and breadth of the drug culture that The Doors had by the time their "used for Stairway" song was written. That may (and may not) explain the "betterness" of the Beatles version than the Doors version, but whatever the actual truth, I agree with you, Elfdude.
