The pads serve a purpose. How many 260lb guys who run a 4.4sec 40yd dash, and can bench 500lbs play rugby?

Question is, wopuld you want someone like that to treat you when your ill or defend you in court. Rugby Union is an amateur sport and seems to be mainly played by doctors and lawyers.
