"The science of the politician consists in fixing the true point of happiness and freedom. Those men would deserve the gratitude of ages, who should discover a mode of government that contained the greatest sum of individual happiness, with the least national expense."

"WHEREFORE, instead of gazing at each other with suspicious or doubtful curiosity, let each of us hold out to his neighbor the hearty hand of friendship, and unite in drawing a line, which, like an act of oblivion, shall bury in forgetfulness every former dissension. Let the names of Whig and Tory be extinct; and let none other be heard among us, than those of a good citizen, an open and resolute friend, and a virtuous supporter of the RIGHTS of MANKIND, and of the FREE AND INDEPENDENT STATES OF AMERICA."

--Thomas Paine in 1776

It seems to kind of come and go in cycles. He wrote that at the end of a long pamphlet in which he was making the case for standing up to England and declaring independence.

At the time when the Declaration of Independence was signed the colonies were pretty much divided in thirds on the issue. A third of the people were strongly in favor of it, a third said they didn't know, and another third, while liking the idea of independence, were afraid of the actions England would take if independence were to be declared so they opposed it.

Once the Revolutionary war commenced, the people were quite united.

I still remember the feeling of unity this country had on 9/12/01. We weren't talking about Tories and Whigs or Republicans and Democrats. We were simply Americans and we knew what we had to do.

Unfortunately, there are too many people in governance whose power is threatened by unity and maintained by division. Thus, division was sought and achieved in a relatively short period of time. Throwing out the old boss and bringing in a new boss had no unifying effect... quite the opposite in fact.

So, I was moved when I read Thomas Paine's words. I'm trying to completely abandon party politics in my own life and base everything on values and principles. I no longer care what party the candidate belongs too... I only want to know about his or her values and principles. I want to know where they stand on honesty, personal responsibility, freedom, property rights, the pursuit of life, liberty, and happiness, whether they be respecters of the law or respecters of men, etc.

And I long to see the people of this nation treating each other like friends... doing unto others as they would like to have others doing unto them.

That is because the problem with Scotland is that its full of Scots, those Scots ruined Scotland.

"Without music life would be a mistake" Friedrich Wilhelm Nietzsche.

"Music cleanses the understanding; inspires it, and lifts it into a realm which it would not reach if it were left to itself" Henry Ward Beecher.

...and my fav' "Music expresses that which cannot be said and on which it is impossible to be silent" Victor Hugo.

In the spirit of 4:20 here are some classic quotes from Harry J. Anslinger

Image

Anslinger was an extremely ambitious man, and he recognized the Bureau of Narcotics as an amazing career opportunity -- a new government agency with the opportunity to define both the problem and the solution. He immediately realized that opiates and cocaine wouldn't be enough to help build his agency, so he latched on to marijuana and started to work on making it illegal at the federal level.

Anslinger immediately drew upon the themes of racism and violence to draw national attention to the problem he wanted to create. He also promoted and frequently read from "Gore Files" -- wild reefer-madness-style exploitation tales of ax murderers on marijuana and sex and... Negroes. Here are some quotes that have been widely attributed to Anslinger and his Gore Files:

"There are 100,000 total marijuana smokers in the US, and most are Negroes, Hispanics, Filipinos, and entertainers. Their Satanic music, jazz, and swing, result from marijuana use. This marijuana causes white women to seek sexual relations with Negroes, entertainers, and any others."

"...the primary reason to outlaw marijuana is its effect on the degenerate races."

"Marijuana is an addictive drug which produces in its users insanity, criminality, and death."

"Reefer makes darkies think they're as good as white men."

"Marihuana leads to pacifism and communist brainwashing"

"You smoke a joint and you're likely to kill your brother."

"Marijuana is the most violence-causing drug in the history of mankind."

And he loved to pull out his own version of the "assassin" definition:

"In the year 1090, there was founded in Persia the religious and military order of the Assassins, whose history is one of cruelty, barbarity, and murder, and for good reason: the members were confirmed users of hashish, or marihuana, and it is from the Arabs' 'hashashin' that we have the English word 'assassin.'"
