NEW BEDFORD, Mass. (WPRI) - A New Bedford man has no one to blame but himself for thousands of dollars in damages to his home. Fire officials said the homeowner was using a blow torch to melt ice on his back porch Monday, when he accidentally set his home on fire.
The fire spread quickly, and when crews arrived on scene they found flames shooting from the second and third floors of the triple-decker home. It took 25 firefighters to bring the fire control.
The flames caused $20,000 to $30,000 in damges. No one was hurt during the incident, according to Fire Capt. Scott Kruger. He said the smoke detectors went off and everyone made it out safely.
The homeowner will not face any charges, however Kruger said using a blow torch to melt ice or thaw pipes isn't a safe idea.
