Moral Dilemma

I have only recently returned to my drums after a reluctant absence and all is well. My guitarist is pleased and of course I'm inspired after seeing the boys live :-) .
I must stop waffling so to cut a long story short, a chance meeting with an ex-workmate has led to a couple of hours jamming with his new band. I returned an hour ago and I'm so confused. I have been asked to join, practise until xmas then start gigging.
To be honest I consider myself an 'ok' drummer, I tend to get comments like 'he's pretty good isnt he?' not simply 'Good' but 'pretty good'. I do not practise enough due to time restraints and feel I'm competent only. I havent played a gig in years and that was a weekly jam night that ended up as a short lived band. The previous drummer of this band has returned to his guitar having dabbled in the drums but I seem to have impressed them and I've been offered the gig.
Now for the confusing bit. They number four people whose ages range from 19 to 23 and I'm bloody 37 for Ged's sake! I'ts not a vanity issue, a new Rush tour shirt and jeans fit in anywhere, it's the simple fact that it's bugging the hell out of me and perhaps it shouldnt?
I offered to jam with them on a regular basis until someone befitting their age arrives but they seem adamant that I'm the one. Practise two nights a week initially, the wife has given her full support and it's up to me. I wasnt that impressed with the material and hope to include my 'Husk' homey Dan on guitar...who knows?
Thoughts please.

Ogg, i think i understand what you're talkin about. you're not worried about looking older, you're prob just worried that you won't fit in. after all, your tastes are prob a lot more sophisticated than theirs!!

listen, give them a try, & if you decide you really don't feel comfortable, then tell them you don't think you're the one for the job. if you decide you enjoy being part of the group, stick with it. it'd prob be fun for you to do a gig after so many years!

besides, 10 years isn't that big of a difference!! hey, it worked for the backstreet boys.. :P

good luck makin a decision Ogg, & congrats for impressing the younger generation!!

if they're fun to play with, go for it! If the material makes it not fun to play with them... heck, don't do it if it's not fun. But I'd suggest that be the deciding factor, not the age difference.

I say go for it if you think you can influence them to improve their material and if you get on with them. I've not played in a proper band environment for about 13 and really miss it.

I've had two offers since then but turned them down for different reasons.

The first was because it was a proto-thrash band (and I wasn't much of a thrash band) and the rest of them didn't seem to have the first clue about playing their instruments (I was right, I think they folded about six months later). Besides, I hated the name they used - Scrawm.

The second I declined because the guitarist who asked me was such a two-faced bastard. He'd spent months slagging off the band I was in at the time and the musical ability of all the members. After we split, I found that he'd gone round and asked every member of Bastille (my Band) to join his. What a tosser. Besides, they also had a name I hated - Lacerate which was soon changed to an even worse one, Mr Scary.

So, give it a try. If it don't work out, at least you'll have the experience of playing with a different set of people which can only be a benefit. (You can always move up here, I need a drummer).

I say go for it, Ogg. Unless you think you are compromising your music somehow, because that is always a don't. But the issue here seems to be basically age. And your age (internally) seems to be young enough. Rock on!
