I read that Maria von Trapp was cheated out of all but a tiny sliver of the profits, and that license was taken with the facts to make the movie.

Major license was taken with the movie. There was no Uncle Max, it was a Catholic priest in reality. The reason they all left Germany (Austria actually, but at that time Germany had annexed it), was due to the fact that they could not do what Hitler wanted them to due to their religious beliefs. They ended up in the US and the story they tell of how G-d provided for them time and again is amazing! It is an inspiring book for any who believe in G-d to read.
