I am a huge fan of the show Last of the Summer Wine and I hear "ta" a lot in that show. I think even in Doctor Who I heard that word. Dan says either or are correct.

How is "ta" pronounced? Is the a long or short or somewhat different?

it depends....I do sometimes say ta as well......when adults say ta is usually a short 'a'....but it's also what we teach the kids to say when they're learning to talk and then it's long as in 'ta-ah'

and light.....Last of the Summer Wine is as English as get oot ;)

which means btw it's as English as really English :-D

Yes = Aye

No = Naw

Corned beef and potatoes = Stovies

Haggis, Turnip and Potatoes = Haggis, Neeps and Tatties

Mouth = Coupon (as in "Shut your coupon")

Give me = Gies

TV = Telly

Television/DVD/Video remote control = The buttons

Over = Ower

Football = Fitba'

(So the above sentence "Give me the television remote control over so I can watch football" would be "Gies the telly buttons ower so ah can watch the fitba'.")

I haven't got any idea what you mean = Ah've nae a clue whit ye're oan aboot

You're kidding right? = Awa' wi' ye!!

Here we go:

Yes = Yep
No = NOPE
Corned Beef and potatoes = screamin' shits
Haggis, turnip and Potatoes = This ain't food...This here's what "food" EATS!
Mouth = Piehole
Give Me = Gimme
TV = Idiot Box
TV, DVD, Video remote control = Clicker
Over = Ova
Football = Fu'bawl

and a couple of new ones:

can = kin
there = thar
so as = so's
that = dat
alright = ayeeeet

"Gimme dat clicker, so's I kin change the channel on that thar idiot box, ayeeet?"

okokok lol back to Scottish lessons...what's next? :shock: :?

Compo from Last of the Summer Wine:

"What kind of a pillock rides a hillock? :-D I love that show and it's hard to find the videos when they don't sell the complete series and that is one mighty long series.

I'll tell you of an experience I had in Wales which makes me determined to learn so many proper british words.

Dan and I went to see the Christmas lights get switched on in the shopping area downtown. It was a grand site and I saw the mayor of Pembrokeshire and the town crier dressed in the clothes like A Christmas Carol.
After a great fireworks display, we walked to a chippey (fast food place), and got some food. I ordered a hamburger and chips. The woman asked if I wanted a roll. I thought it was like the dinner rolls we have for dinner and I thought why would I need one if I got the bun for the burger already. So I said no and Dan and I got our food and headed for home. When I opened up my plate, I noticed only the meat and the chips but no bun. I was going to question Dan about this until it hit me that roll meant BUN! :oops: :lol: He even confirmed it but I ate my food like that anyway. So when I go back and when we go to a chippey again, I'm getting the roll. :P

Ummm no. I think they just fried it. I want more practice at a chippy. A few people in front of me ordered different things like fish or pies and I forgot the questions they asked. :?
