Okay, I come home and go through my mail looking for my mom's discharge papers (yeah, they were there) and anything else that looked official that I might need to deal with, so I would know to get going on it today.
I got this loverly letter from the State of Washington Dept. of Social and Health Services entitled: Notice of Intent to File Lien. They want the $26, 064.35 that they paid to care for my mom for medical assistance from 5/20/2003 to 7/12/2008. They said in the letter the lien will be "delayed" if she has a surviving spouse (she does). So, this will go into effect when my dad dies. He's so freaking in debt that there is no way selling his home will pay off his bills, much less the lien.
*sigh*
I am going to seek legal counsel and I plan to contact my legislators. This is just plain wrong!
Moral of the lesson: if you plan on getting help from the government with healthcare, just remember it will have to be paid back by your grieving children.

I had to do something similar at grandma's end. Sucks.
I hope that somehow something or someone can intervene and help you with this, t.

You know my mom went through a similar situation with her parents. My grandma had a stroke about 10 years prior to her death..and she was in a nursing home on Medicade. my grandpa was still alive and his house was paid for, so mom had the house put in her name while Grandpa was still alive and when he died, all of his assets were in my mom's name and the state could not touch them. and the state could not do anything to my mom as far as putting a lien on the house.. Mom sold the house after Grandpa died and the goverment got nothing.. maybe that would work for you as well, since they are not going to put the lien on the house until after he dies..
Happy 2015!
Okay, so a number of years back I went to our local school district office to fill out a form required by law of all home schoolers and I noticed that the form was asking for more information than the law asked for, so I wrote letter and the district put the word "optional" next to all items they wanted that the law does not demand.
Just prior to going to Alaska I went to fill out the form so I'd be sure to have it done on time, not being sure when we'd get back from our journey and all. I was told that I could not fill it out at that time because they were "updating" the form. Hmmmm.....updating? The laws haven't changed any.
Well, I'm back and so I went in to fill out the form. Guess what I found? The form was the same except a few words were missing. All the items that are optional by law are no longer marked as optional making it look like you need to disclose more information than you really do.
Ticks me off when government agencies trick you into thinking you need to tell them things that you don't need tell them!
Yeah, I'm writing more letters. This time I'll be sure to write a letter to the editor of the paper as well as the district. Most home schoolers have likely filled their forms out for this year, but I want them to know that the district knows this information they are asking for is not required, the district used to be up front about it not being required, but the district has decided to quit being honest about that now.
I suppose they may say, "Well, you should know the laws" but you know how many people get scared and think they may have missed something or that they will be audited or something if they don't fill out the whole form?
*grumbles*
