Good question. And I have two reasons (not saying I'll never do it though):

1. It's a real hassle and I'm lazy! With hollowbodies there are no access covers to allow you to get at the electronics. They're a bear to do any kind of wiring work on.

2. Unless I were to try to install push-pull pots for coil-splitting (see reason number one for my reluctance), I'd have to make more holes in that pretty guitar. :(

Well... change of plans. I'm not going to mount a third pickup. But I had already received the 5-way switch, so I decided to install it anyway and use it to take advantage of some coil splitting opportunities (like Kyle was talking about). So... no new holes in the guitar or anything but now it can do a variety of sounds:

1 Bridge Humbucker
2 Bridge Single Coil
3 Bridge and Neck simultaneously as single coils
4 Neck Single Coil
5 Neck Humbucker

It looks kind of cool with the new switch. I'll try to get a pic soon.

edit: Here's a pic!

So... here is my first Carvin bass, as mentioned in that other thread.

Maple and koa... they look great together. Sorry the photos are a little bleached out... direct sunlight. I'll try to get better ones soon.

Yes, BBO, it sounds amazing.

And my daughter and I quickly discovered that we have a whole lot to learn. I played the cello all through my school years so fretless necks aren't completely foreign to me. But in that big scale... it's a real challenge. A challenge I'm looking forward to taking on!

The five knobs are volume, balance between the two pickups, bass, treble, and an adjustable mid-boost. Took a while to figure that out. :)

Best of all... it's a CARVIN!!! :-D

When I bought it, I told my friend that he retains the right to purchase it back, should he ever dsesire.

Yup...that was a dead giveaway.

My git buddy has a vintage Schecter Strat with one. NASTY tone.

May it serve you well Elf!

nice bass elf, Still don't know what those 6th strings are for, but I would like to get another five and tune it E A D G C, I just can't see myself needing the high C and the low B at the same time, and it is an excuse to carry a second bass around. Not to mention I love the asym 5 neck carvin offers all too much.

I got a new guitar toy lately too, this :http://www.musicroom.com/se/ID_No/0407209/details.html The guy looks like a nerd but is extremely good, it will hone my muting and choking techniques hopefully.
