I've been gigging with a solid state amp for a few months now. I didn't really think I'd be taking it out more than my tube amp when I bought it. But... sho'nuff, it happened.

My brother has dumped a lot of money into his Marshall half stack. He bought a used DSL 100 head and then sent it to Voodoo to be modded to his tastes. He also replaced all the speakers in the cab to a different model of Celestion that he liked a little better than the Celestions that came in it. I think he's nuts. But it sounds great!

My guitarist has mentioned getting his Marshall head, and his Carvin gear done like this voodoo. It is really that good???

I didn't find the before and after thing with my brother's amp to be like, "Holy cats, that's AMAZING!" The differences were subtle. But they were there. The amp was just a little bit brittle before. After playing for a long time that brittleness can kind of hurt the ears and and the mood. It's smoother and creamier now, with a little bit more gain I think.

Some Carvin amps do "better" (it's all subjective, of course) with mods and some are perfect the way they are, like the new X100B reissue and the new Vai Legacy 2. I've never heard of anyone wanting to modify one of those.

Crate makes tough amps too. Billy Gibbons, Sammy Hagar and George
Lynch are using 'em these days. They'd BETTER be tough.

My second choice was the Crate 120W Flex Wave half stack.

Never looked up prices, nothing wrong with solid state anyway, I am no tube snob For basses I like crisp bright tones, so solid state is my easy choice. Might get a X-100B carvin amp this fall if summer savings goes better by then (its been rough thus far)

Eh, all this talk about tone....If it isn't loaded with hellish distortion or
layered in chorus, I don't play it. hahahahaha

But I'm with you. I don't have the time to tweak knobs and upgrade stuff,
so I just grip it and rip it. That's just me.

well the X-100 is the amp zappa used in the 80's, same for vai. So it can do pretty dirty. I HATE modellers, hate them, too many menus and crap. I like buttons, in my hand, that I can tweak. I just want a good sounding amp I can set and forget, and thereafter get a few pedals (wah, OD, chorus, delay, maybe volume ) and then I have a completely at my finger tips rig that won't involve wading through crap to use. First then amp, as its the big fish, then accumulate the pedals when I can.

I have a modeller, hence my hate for them, its aGNX3000. I set up one patch I use, channel one is clean, channel 2 is between crunchy and good lead. the volume pedal can be wah. Pretty poor use of a modeller, but I can't be arsed to set up more patches.

I have a Morley Wah on the inbound side of my Zoom pedals, and I use
the clean channel on my Crate most of the time.

With that setup, if I switch to the "crunch" channel - I can feel my hair
stand up, and watch the paint peel off the wall. LOL

It's the creepiest, nastiest, ugliest chop-job of modulation you'll ever
hear. hahaha

Last night's gig was a rough one. I was sick as a dog (still am) with a bad cold and sore throat. This was just an acoustic gig, our drummer and bass player couldn't make it... but my brother had committed that he could provide something for these people.

So I medicated myself heavily, sucked on Fisherman's Friend whenever I had to sing, and drank Mountain Dew to keep me awake. For an acoustic gig, I guess it went okay. To me they always sound rather weak.

But the cool thing was that my daughter, Stesha, sat in with us. She played about 2/3 of the songs with us, playing acoustic 12-string, accordion, and bass. I'd never had the opportunity to gig with her before and really enjoyed it.
