A toddy is a hot drink, traditionally made with whisky, sweetened with honey and flavoured with spices (usually cloves). Obviously, they are popular in Scotland (where the whisky comes from), and like all good British recipes, the Americans probably claim that they were invented in Milwaukee in the 20s. A basic toddy recipe (plenty of room for experimentation!) might run something like this:
Warm a mug or large cup with some boiling water. Drain it, and add a cinnamon stick, a large (60ml) shot of whisky (a decent blended Scotch is fine, though you could equally well try an Irish, Canadian or American whiskey), a tablespoon of honey and top up with fresh boiling water. Then drop in a lemon slide studded with 3 cloves. Stir, and leave to mellow for a minute or two.
Other spirits that could be employed for a toddy-style drink include rum, brandy and reposado tequila. You could substitute an orange slice for rum or brandy, and a lime slice for the tequila.
