Bummer they didn't win this, but some bands never even win one, and they did that. I don't expect this loss will keep them down, though, from what I've heard.

Okay, I mentioned in the Three Words thread that last night's gig was kind of weird. It's not a particularly interesting story I'm sure, but I'll let you know what I'm talking about.

It was a church dinner/dance party... Valentine's themed, though a little late. We had been told in advance that they wanted people to be able moth to dance and to sit around and talk so we knew that we'd have to keep the volume down. We set up with that in mind. Didn't mic any of the guitar amps or anything. Turned them down to a much lower volume than we normally would (and we all know that tube amps sound much better when the tubes are saturated).

So, we're all set up and we do a quick sound check. My sister in law was there and walked around the room (small gym) and came back and said "You're too loud!"

"Really?" We all look at each other baffled.

"Really. It may not be loud up there but out here in front of the speakers it really is!"

Well... okay. We turn everything down even further. We play a few songs and the group invites us to come join them for dinner. So, we grab some food and are eating quickly. The woman in charge comes over and tells us that we're doing a really good job. We thank her. Then she asks, "When you go back on can you turn it down another notch?" I probably looked stunned. My brother is such a nice guy he immediately jumps in with, "Of course! You bet!"

For some reason, this really stirred up the rebellious teenager in me. Generally I'm the one in the band who wants us to turn down because my brother loves to make his amp scream and the rest of us try to keep up with him. So the tables are completely turned here.

So we go back up to the stage and turn down even more. Our drummer uses the very lightest sticks he has. It felt so weird to be doing a dance at a much lower level than we do in my living room.

On the upside; they danced! And they had fun. And I didn't need to use my hearing protection so I heard everything far more clearly than I usually do.

The other fun thing about the night... I recently picked up a used piece of gear made by Digitech called the Vocalist Live 4. To see what it does, check this out:

We already sing harmonies, but this added a new dimension to them. I will never do another show without it!

I have had a few of the "Turn down" gigs, before.........
We had people dancing to Iron Maiden at one show. We also played all the songs slower than we normally did.

I use 7A sticks all the time now because the Lake Resort 5 summer gig required lighter sticks. So no more 5A or 2B sticks for me ever again.

The Question recently invested in some black lights and fluorescent markers to enhance a couple of their live songs.

Cool.

Well, last night's gig started out to be a typical Classic Rock Night. Except I had a new Carvin I was excited about...




But after our opening set, when the open mic segment got going, something special happened. These kids, and I do mean kids (that guitarist is 13) took the stage. That was cool in and of itself. Most of the crowd there is made up of old men like me. But these kids came on...



... and opened with YYZ of all things! They even threw a very Peart-inspired drum solo in the middle! The place went completely nuts for them! They followed up with Crazy Train but then went back to Rush, playing Limelight and The Spirit of Radio! It was insane watching them and they got cheers like crazy! It was so cool!

When their songs were done the MC went up to the mic and said, "Well... Tom was signed up to be next but he says he doesn't want to go on now..."
I didn't blame him.

Fortunately by the time we were to go back on there had been plenty of the typical old-man acts to open the door for us.

It was a really cool night.
