Richardson Withdraws Cabinet Post,
Cites Ongoing Corruption Investigation
by Stephen Dinan
Monday, January 5, 2009
President-elect Barack Obama said Sunday that he would withdraw Gov.
Bill Richardson's nomination to be commerce secretary, with Mr.
Richardson citing an ongoing corruption investigation in New Mexico.
In statements released by the presidential transition team, the New
Mexico governor said he has not done anything wrong but that the
investigation by federal prosecutors "would have forced an untenable
delay in the confirmation process" and he asked Mr. Obama to withdraw
the nomination.
"Governor Richardson is an outstanding public servant and would have
brought to the job of commerce secretary and our economic team great
insights accumulated through an extraordinary career in federal and
state office," the president-elect said.
Mr. Richardson had been the highest-profile Hispanic pick for Mr. Obama's
Cabinet. While his withdrawal defuses what could have become messy
confirmation hearings, it also is the first major crack in what had been a
successful Cabinet rollout for Mr. Obama and came the same day that
two of Congress' top Democrats said they did not expect to have a
stimulus package on his desk by Inauguration Day.

Judge Tells Madoff To Show What's Left
Larry Neumeister (AP)
Disgraced money manager Bernard Madoff has been ordered to provide a
list by the end of the year of his assets and liabilities, a key step in
finding what is left of the estimated $50 billion he got from investors.
U.S. District Judge Louis L. Stanton signed an order late Thursday
requiring the 70-year-old Madoff to provide a verified accounting of all of
his assets, liabilities and property to the Securities and Exchange
Commission.
The directive was contained in an order that preserves a freeze on Mr.
Madoff's assets, a directive put in place a week ago after authorities first
filed charges against the former Nasdaq stock market chairman.
A message asking for comment left with Mr. Madoff's lawyer was not
immediately returned Friday.
The court filing was made as investigators spent another day trying to
untangle Mr. Madoff's operation. Investigators have started serving grand
jury subpoenas requiring witnesses to testify and seeking documents,
according to an official familiar with the case. The official, who spoke on
the condition of anonymity because the investigation is ongoing, declined
to identify who was served or specify which documents were wanted.
Mr. Madoff was subjected to electronic monitoring and a nighttime curfew
earlier this week as angry investors who lost billions seek information
about what happened to money they thought was safely invested with
someone who was widely respected on Wall Street for nearly half a
century.
The judge's order, agreed to by Mr. Madoff, demanded details of all
assets, funds or property held by Mr. Madoff and the names and locations
of entities, bank accounts, brokerage accounts, investments or assets
held by his business, Bernard L. Madoff Investment Securities LLC.
The order also puts control of all of his artwork, property, cars, jewelry
and other items in the hands of a court-appointed receiver.
The order also requires that the receiver, lawyer Lee Richards, prevent
the disposal of any of the assets of Madoff Securities International and
determine to what extent funds were commingled between Mr. Madoff's
U.S. operations and any businesses overseas.
It also directed the receiver to locate any assets that may have been
transferred to third parties or concealed by foreign entities.
Judge Stanton said the receiver must report to the court by Jan. 26 on the
status of the foreign business and provide a list of customers and clients,
including the amounts received by Mr. Madoff from each customer and
the amounts withdrawn by them.
A temporary order freezing Mr. Madoff's assets was signed last week, but
the new order extends the protection of assets, sets deadlines and
provides more details on the responsibilities of Mr. Madoff and the
receiver.
Mr. Madoff's family essentially turned him in to authorities last week,
blowing the whistle on what authorities said he described as a "giant
Ponzi scheme."
Authorities say Mr. Madoff confessed to family members that he had for
years been paying returns to certain investors out of the principal
received from others until he had only $200 million to $300 million
remaining.
The charge against Mr. Madoff carries a potential penalty of up to 20
years in prison. Other charges could be added as the case is presented
to a grand jury.

Gone In 60 Seconds
(Inaugural parade tickets)
By NAFEESA SYEED
Tickets for the inaugural parade? Gone in 60 seconds.
The Presidential Inaugural Committee put 5,000 tickets on sale Friday at 1
p.m. and they sold out in less than a minute, with 94 percent purchased
online and the rest by phone, said Albert Lopez, a Ticketmaster
spokesman.
"It was a blazingly fast on-sale," Lopez said of the tickets, priced at $25
apiece for bleacher seats.
Linda Douglass, the inaugural committee's chief spokeswoman, called the
selling time startling. "You just have to assume there must have been
people sitting there at their computers ready to go when the clock struck
one," she said.
Nearly matching the record sale time was how fast the tickets could be
found on eBay, where one seller had listed the price for three tickets at
$1,199.
Douglass said inaugural officials strongly disapprove of anyone seeking to
make a profit from the sale of the tickets.
The parade will be held Jan. 20 after the swearing in of President-elect
Barack Obama and Vice President-elect Joe Biden.
Nazia Abbas, a consultant from Centreville, Va., nabbed two tickets for
her and her husband.
"At 12:58 (p.m.) I logged onto Ticketmaster," the 28-year-old said. "I was
pretty sure there wouldn't be any left, but I guess I was pretty quick."
Abbas tried to get two more, but it was too late. She said she'll believe it
when the tickets show up in the mail (within three business days, as
promised.)
"I totally was thinking it wasn't going to happen," she said. "To be honest,
it's going to be one of those 'I'll believe it when I see it,' when I have the
tickets in my hand."
For perspective, Lopez compared the sales with an AC/DC concert in
Vancouver last year at a 15,000-seat arena. Tickets for that show were
gone in 3 1/2 minutes.
About 300 parade tickets will be given to District of Columbia students
who win an essay contest, along with their families.

Obama Dines at George Will's Home
Tuesday, January 13, 2009 8:38 PM
President-elect Barack Obama gathered Tuesday night for dinner with a
Who?s Who of conservative American political writers at the home of
pundit George Will, according to several reports.
Among those in attendance at the dinner at Will?s Chevy Chase house:
David Brooks of the New York Times, Weekly Standard founder William
Kristol, and syndicated columnist Charles Krauthammer. The Los Angeles
Times speculated that Rush Limbaugh himself might be in attendance, but
that apparently proved incorrect.
The guests were identified only after an enterprising pool reporter caught
a glimpse through one of the windows of Will's home, reportedly valued
at $1.9 million, according to The Washington Post.
The Times did suggest that the dinner was arranged by Obama?s chief
political strategist, David Axelrod, himself a former Chicago political
reporter. The president-elect arrived at Will?s house at about 6:30 p.m.
Obama spokesman Tommy Vietor, spotted at the dinner party by a pool
reporter, refused to confirm details, telling Politico.com that the dinner
was off the record. In a pool report filed from outside Will?s home,
Kenneth R. Bazinet of the New York Daily News wrote, ?This is for real,
folks. The bloggers are going to love this one.?
