The 12 days (according to Christianity) are the 12 days between Dec. 25th (the birth of Christ) and Jan 6th (The Magi's supposed arrival with the gifts), not prior to the day. In fact in Puerto Rico, the kids receive a small gift yesterday, and get the majority of their loot Jan 6th.
In my home growing up we celebrated advent beginning four Sundays before Christmas and then we celebrated Christmas, then on the 6th of January there was Epiphany. We only did presents on Christmas eve and Christmas day though, except when we celebrated Hannukah one year.

My best friend in HS came right from Puerto Rico...and I was over for Christmas at his house one afternoon in the early 1990's when he was home from college and it was HIL-AR-I-OUS watching his little brother (who KNEW there was a Sega under the tree) just about pop because he had to wait 12 days to open it.
