How could I miss this?
Of course I have to mention the continuing inspiration of Mr Peart and of course, diverse others.
During my teenage years Clive Burr and Nicko McBrain ala 'Maiden became a major influence as did Barrimore Barlow of Jethro Tull, Lars Ulrich of (early Metallica) and Marillion's Ian Mosley.
I loved the whole grunge thang especially the rythmic skills of Soundgarden's Matt Camerron and Pearl Jam's amazing Dave Abbruzzese. I admire many more but I've gone strangely blank

I was really surprised that no one mentioned Stewart Copeland. For those that don't know who he is, Stewart was the drummer of the Police. Excellent technical drummer and unique sound. He also does a lot of soundtrack work for movies these days.

Stewart Copeland was an excellent drummer.....i know bugger all about the 'technicalities' of drummer but I like what I hear and I always liked and still do like The Police

oh, yeah, I've seen some good ones on this thread. I'll second some of those names such as:
Virgil Donati
Seriously, the guy's mind-boggling. I love his inhuman capacity of odd-time polyrhythms and his love for solid rock.
Dave Weckl
One of the most tasteful players I've ever heard, by far. He's so smooth with exalted chops. He's just. . . just. . . a GREAT player.
Vinnie Colaiuta
This guy baffles me. Sometimes he's playing some simple accompaniment (very polished, of course) and other times he's just way out there with keeping track of strange time. He can be as smooth or as unpredictable as I can believe.
Manu Katche
To quote my good friend, "He just blesses every song he plays in." Amen. I love this guy's creativity and incredible flexibility between 3's 4's 5's, 6's, 7's, [enter random subdividing number here]. He inspires my mutterings of "...that was sweet."
Stewart Copeland is a very fun one as well.

Nick D'Virgilio
Man, this guy is what I would call a developed progressive-drummer. He manages to keep quite busy with a ton of different old ideas put together in fun ways. He's got some chops.
Mark Zonder
I think he's got a very unique approach and a distinct drumming personality. Cool stuff.
Byron Landham
Holy schlong! I saw this guy in concert with Joey DeFrancesca. What can I say? Incredible! A GREAT of the NEW generation!
