Actually it's of Celtic origin (hailing from South West of England, paticulary the county of Cornwall makes me 'Cornish' and a supposed direct link to our Northern cousins).
The Celtic translation of 'Ugh' is 'Awip doth maketh the sun shine upon my face with her overfloweth humour'.

I like the way the French pronounce "ugh" when they overdub cowboy and Indian movies... it's kind of like "oogh".
