I've been talking to my mate Gavin Harrison again...you know, the Porcupine Tree drummer 8) @Drummerworld.com :-)

Any recollections of this Gavin? Personally I consider it quite the find...

Hi Ogg,
We had a really great time making that record. It's a long time ago now - but I loved working with the other members Danny Thompson, Pandit Dinesh and Jakko Jakszyk. It came together really quickly at Spaceward Studios near Cambridge. We all played together and it was a nice vibe - sadly nothing really came of it as the record company dropped it after about a year.

Cheers
Gavin"

There you go. He has now twice ignored my question concerning Rush and PT touring together although he replied to another recently by saying "We'd love to play with Rush if we had an invite" Hmm...

You think you could get hold of Neil and ask him to invite them?

Rush doesn't need a warm up band!

PT did go on tour with Yes a few years ago. That would have been cool.
Aren't you the guy who hit me in the eye?

Rush don't need one, but could you imagine a wee festival made of the two?

Nah. When Rush plays with someone else, they don't spend as much time on stage. I've loved these last few tours with no warm up band.

I've read so much about that Elfie, PT were blowing Yes off stage every single night (on the 'In Absentia' tour) so they're suddenly beset with problems, pa, lights etc etc. PT's Steve Wilson is quoted as saying 'I honestly dont think Jon Anderson was hiding behind things, unplugging cables..." :-) .

I cannot understand the reluctance? Imho what an amazing show that would be. Let's face there's not too many bands the now that Rush would/could invite. Probably only you damn yanks would get such a bill anyway (PT can headline here) so why the negativity? A 45 min PT set followed by 2 hr 45 Rush set...perfection :-) Besides, both bands would benefit from the mutual appreciation...ala Rush and Primus back in the day...

Another question...another reply, from my mate :-D .
Gavin Harrison wrote:Hi Ogg,
I don't really do the classic type of 'drum solo' where everyone goes off the stage and leaves the drummer to play a huge solo for 20 minutes. I'd rather improvise over a section - such as the end of "Hatesong". I don't think I've done the classic solo since my Renaissance days in 1983.

His Renaissance days? Does that mean he was in the band, Renaissance with Annie Haslam?

Apparently so...from Wikipedia "1983 - Gavin Harrison (drums) replaced Barron and Mosley, Mike Taylor (keyboards) replaced Gosling, Hardin and Magnus..." Had a wee browse:

'Former Yardbirds members Paul Samwell-Smith, Keith Relf, and Jim McCarty organised a new group devoted to experimentation between rock, folk, and classical forms. This quintet (Relf on guitar & vocals, McCarty on drums, plus bassist Louis Cennamo, pianist John Hawken, and Relf's sister Jane Relf as an additional vocalist) released a pair of albums on Elektra (US) and Island (UK), the first one being produced by Samwell-Smith, but dissolved quickly, leaving McCarty to reform the band into a very different lineup, though McCarty also soon departed...'

Also 'Annie Haslam (born in 1944, in Bolton, Lancashire) is an English progressive rock vocalist and songwriter. Originally a fashion student, she began studying under opera singer Sybil Knight in 1970 and developed her extraordinary five octave range. Next year in 1971, she became the lead singer of Renaissance after answering an ad in a magazine...'

Hmm, I'm downloading two albums Elfie, interesting :-)

...and that's a bad thing? Imagine Neil Peart posting in a drum forum AND replying to your questions? Next best thing imho :-)

Cool. I've got a few old Renaissance 33 and a third LP's ('cos I'm an old coot) and I really like 'em.
