Holy shit!!! My daughter broke her ankle this weekend. We were delivering papers and she was in the back of our Caravan. I backed into a driveway and it rolled up under the van and the concrete. I heard it snap from the drivers seat. It was the most gruesome thing I have ever seen. Her foot looked like a piece of rubber. She had surgery this weekend and came home yesterday. She is in a cast up to her groin. I do not understand that as it was the ankle that broke. The docs said her age will speed her recovery and she should be healed in 6 to 8 weeks. She is misearable in this heat, can't go swimming nothing. I feel bad since it was me driving.

I hope you feel better soon Schu, I had to share because this is kind of a coincidence.

Oh, MY, Schu! I'm so sorry! What a bummer. Yes, keep it elevated! I mean it. Swelling is NO good for it.

Soupy! I'm so sorry about your daughter's footy too. Poor baby.

A few years ago I broke my ankle AND leg and had a cast up to my groin too. I had casts and leg braces for 6 months. Ugh. No fun.

How old were you? The doctor said she should be just fine in 6-8 weeks. He did not mention leg braces, I hope that is not the case. maybe you had to because you were older. The Dr did say she was lucky because of her age. Had it been someone my age it would have required pins, plates with major sugery. All they did to her was put her to sleep and pop the ankle back in place. no pins thank God. It was awful, the leg where the ankle is was broke completely and cleanly. I was frantic, the emergency room nurse said to relax it just might be a bad sprain and I was like "yeah whatever, I have seen sprains before and it did not look like one I had ever seen" She was laying on the driveway when I got out and I really expected the bone to be sticking out when I rolled her over.

I was in my twenties but Soup it was a BAD break. The ankle was broken and then the break went up my leg in what is called a "spiral" fracture. It went through both bones like a barbar pole spiral. Literally my lower leg spun around like a corkscrew. Since both the tibia and fibula were snapped through they had to immobilize the joints below and above the fracture (ankle and knee) to let the bones "find eachother" and knit together without joint movement. That's why I had the cast up to my groin. Luckily I didn't have pins but the bones were set in a way that the spiral had to fit perfectly near the bones so they grew together properly.

THAT'S why I was out so long. I had six weeks in the hip cast and then it was cut down below the knee like schu's for another 6-8 weeks and then I had a brace on it that finally allowed limited ankle movement but still kept it stable. I broke it in January, came back to work in June with crutches and the brace and got that off later in the summer replaced by bandages and an "air cast" that I removed when I took off my shoes and I had to go to PT. The air cast was like a stabilizing splint and I wore that for the rest of the year. Meh! I'm sure your little girl's break is straighforward and she won't have trouble. But give her a knowing hug from me.

Sorry I went on so long. Just relived the "steps" ugh. :(

Thanks Kev!! Don't feel bad for me though. I am an idiot and should have known better. Hey, that car wreck does explain a lot. j/k buddy. I am glad you lived as I would have never gotten to know ya.

Kares,

yeah, it was bad but not nearly bad as yours. Good grief!! How did it happen if you don't mind me asking?
