La Grande is a little daunted by all of this, but she responds:

Dear Dr. Ibrahim,

Oh my. Let me make sure I understand this. You want me to come to Nigeria to sign the documents? I'm afraid that at my age a trip like that would be impossible. And if I wasn't here, I don't think I could find anyone to watch the jackelopes for me.

But you say that instead of flying to Nigeria, I can do it through the mail but it will cost me $950 in deposits and fees? Do I understand you correctly? Or is $950 just a deposit and there will be additional fees on top of that? How would you want me to send the payment? Oh dear. Can you please explain it to me?

In the meantime I suppose it's okay to have you mail me the forms to fill out, isn't it? My address is:

La Grande Johnson

Goderich, Ontario N7A 2K5

Next, La Grande, feeling a bit anxious, writes to Sam Toho to see if this really is normal procedure for the bank...

Dear Sam,

The bank did indeed write back to me. They tell me that I either need to come to Nigeria to sign the documents or I have to send them $950 to do it through the mail. Is that normal?

La Grande

Stay tuned! The best is yet to come...

You are a sly, devious person. ;) I could never have the "kahunas" to do what you've done but since it's in a good cause...WOW! kudos!

The moment is now! Both Sam Toho and the bank write to La Grande and let her know what she needs to do.

Sam writes:
Dear Mrs Johnson,
Thanks for the good news and that is my New Year gift.
I am glad that the approval for the payment of $30.5m
has been approved in your name.
Let me assure you that in less than 10days from
now, your account will be credited with the amount
approved in your favour.
Please maintain high level of confidentiality in this
transaction until the money is in your account.
I made my inquiry with the central bank of Nigeria to
find the out if it is normal to request for money
before sending the documents to you.
I was made to understand that the bank usually ask for
a refundable deposit of $950 and this MUST be refunded
back to the customer as soon as the customer returned
back the documents after signing to the bank, and on
the other hand signing of the documents at the bank
office in Nigeria is free.
I will advice you ask the bank to send you the
documents, then you will have the opportunity to have a
look at the documentations. It is also clear that you
cannot travel to any part of the world now, therefore
kindly write the bank immediately for the dispatch of
the documents to you in Canada.
Please do include the address where they will send the
documents to you.
Thanks and remain Blessed.
Sam Toho
The bank writes:
Attn La Grande Johnson,
We are happy to hear that finally the documents was well received by you.
Yes it is our standing rules that you MUST deposit a refundable fee of $950 and the amount shall be refunded bact to you as when you send it bank to the central bank of Nigeria.
We have also noted your address where the documents will be posted through DHL courier service.
To facilitate the transfer process,we advice you to send the money through WESTERN UNION MONEY TRANSFER for faster collection.
If we pick up the money today, the documents shall be dispatched to your address in Canada by tomorrow.
Therefore send the money through our mailing officer.
Pay to:IKECHUKWU OKEREKE
ADDRESS;NO 1 TINUBU STREET,LAGOS-NIGERIA
TEXT QUESTION;WHAT IS YOUR NAME
ANS:JOHNSON
Please do send the control number including the senders name and address.
Yours faithfully,
Dr Musa Ibrahim
I was surprised it was only $950 US. I was told that's because they get out of the Nigerian capital punishment by swindling you out of an amount not "equal or greater to $1000 U.S. dollars." This way they only risk jail, which only takes a couple hundred dollar bribe to get out of.

I'm sure if I'd come on as a very wealthy businessman though, rather than a little old lady they'd be risking the penalty to get more out of me.

What will the poor lady do?

To her trusted friend, Sam Toho, La Grande writes:

Okay, Sam.

This makes me very nervous, but I suppose that it's an opportunity that I shouldn't let pass me by. I've already given the bank my home address. They want 950 US dollars, Sam! In Canadian dollars that's closer to $1150! I can pay it, but like I said, I'm nervous. I remember my mother telling me that getting old makes you timid.

I'll do it, Sam. I'll take a bus into town tomorrow morning and get the money from the bank. Then I'll go straight to the Western Union office and send it to the bank.

Thank you so much for choosing me for this!

La Grande

To Dr. Ibrahim at the Bank of Nigeria La Grande writes:

Dear Dr. Ibrahim,

You need 950 US dollars. In Canadian dollars that's $1150.

Though I'm very concerned about this, I'll follow through with it. It's too late for me to go to the bank today, but first thing tomorrow morning I'll take the bus into town. I can withdraw the money from my bank and then walk over to the Western Union office to send the deposit. I think it's only two blocks away. I'm not as young as I used to be but I can still walk two blocks.

I don't know what a control number is, but I'm sure that the people at the Western Union office will explain it to me. I'll e-mail you the number when I get home.

Thank you for your help.

Sincerely,

Mrs. La Grande Johnson

Oh dear. Tragedy has stricken the lovely little town of Goderich. And right by the Western Union office...

From a completely new e-mail address, the esteemed Mr. Sam Toho recieves this message:

To: Sam Toho or Mobi Cesse or WHOEVER YOU ARE!

My name is Alotta Vas Deferens (formerly Johnson). I got your e-mail address from my mother's computer. My mother, La Grande Johnson. My innocent old mother that you were trying to scam out her hard-earned savings you sick MUGU! It's bad enough that you are a thief, but a thief who preys on innocent old ladies is worse than dirt! I'm attaching an article I scanned out of yesterday's newspaper. I want you to know that I hold YOU responsible for this!

This scan from the local newspaper is attached.
