I read somwhere that the song was inspired by an article in a newspaper about a couple of old age that went to visit their family, but never arrived -

We had a couple out here that was driving home from town and drove off into a lake back in the early 1900s. Their car was found not long ago and the body of the man, too, but not the body of the woman, although her personal effects were there. They figure she is hidden under lake bottom stuff.YYZ30 wrote:
