....that's the noise my hard drive makes.
So if I unexpectedly disappear, that'll be why.
And I'll never use another Maxtor. Grr.

WD is a step up. I'm an IBM/Hitachi fan.Devil's Advocate wrote:In my defence, by-tor, I only bought the first one. When it died, I swore I'd never buy another - and I haven't. The one that just died was a spare my sister had, which she gave to me when I was too poor to buy one.
I'm still too poor, but I have a WD on order....

WD drives are pretty solid. My old 486 had one (~400Mb), and I added a second, 2Gb, in about '97. That 2Gb drive has been moved to another computer, reformatted (several times) for Linux of various flavours, and generaly thrashed about. It's still perfectly fine, though I did retire it a couple of years ago to make room for a 20Gb drive. Which failed.
So I swear by WDs - though the 4Gb Seagate on my second PC (1998 vintage) is still going strong, and it hasn't had a 2-year rest. So I reckon they must be pretty good too. But it seems they've just bought Maxtor - so will one get better, or the other worse?
