Wallace's 700th anniversary

Did anyone celebrate...saying that how can you celebrate on the day he was tortured to death...anyway did anyone do anything yesterday?
Here in Scotland there was a 'funeral' for him and ppl did other things

I have not seen a thing about it news wise around here Schu. My news here had a big story about a car jacking where a cat that was in the car was ransomed for $2,000........................ I guess my news thinks some crap like that is more news worthy. Well, I don't . Sorry.

that was way cool, I am not Scottish but the whole William Wallace story moves me. It is cool he finally received his due albeit 700 years too late.

We learned of Wallace in school when I was a kid, but it wasn't until after I saw Braveheart that I decided to take a deeper look at the legend. It seems that Hollywood took some 'liberties' (don't they always? ) when portraying Wallace. Not to say that he wasn't a big part of the freedom movement at the time, but they left out key parts of the story. Most notably him leaving Scotland for a few years to escape execution. And it seems that Hollywood sort of downplayed the role of Robert the Bruce, who was more than likely more instrumental in the changes that came to Scotland afterwards.

Still a very intersting story, firmly showing what people are capable of when you try to take away, or deny them basic rights. Keep in mind, I'm not trying to start a war with the Scots here....I'm sure they know the story better than those of us on this side of the pond. And I'm not saying that Wallace's role was any less...the Hollywood version vs. history's version is just different.

I have always wondered too about tensions between Scotland and England now. Are there any now and has time healed those wounds of long ago, or is there still a difference of opinions or hostility today. Maybe some of our UK folks can elaborate as I find the history of it all very fascinating. I guess what I was trying to say is that the fence around the statue designed to prevent vandalism due to a hatred for William Wallace by the English? and I hope I have not offended anyone as I am curious about the whole history of it.

Thanks for the info, by-tor. I guess it makes sense playing down Robert the Bruce's role since the movie was about a martyr and most of the focus has to go there. At least they made Robert out a "good" guy that triumphed in the end. Hollywood takes HUGE liberties, you're right.

Again, I'm not Scottish so I don't know the true history. DA, that photo is POETIC!!!

This poem by Robert Burns came back to me reading this thread. For some reason (from a book I read as a child) I had much of it memorized for years:
