Stress Ahead
I'd just to apologise to all of you in advance if I get a bit irritable over the new couple of months.
Why?
Because I'm attempting to give up smoking.
One of the things they suggest you do is keep a diary on your efforts so I hope you'll bear with me while I do it here.

One of the main reasons for my quitting (alongside the improved health of my children) is financial. Therefore, at present, I'm unable to afford any NRT and am forced to go it alone.
It's been about 8 hours now, most of which I've been sleeping but the craving is baaaaaaaaaaaaaaaad already - it always is in the mornings. Unfortunately, I'm not able to use fruit as an alternative. While I don't dislike fruit, it certainly dislikes me and I have no intention to spend the next few weeks with the trots.
In a similar way I'm unable to resort to carrot sticks, which I'm told is a good alternative, as the texture of raw carrott makes my teeth crawl (if you know what I mean).
At least tomorrow night I'll have a good distraction as I'm going to Rush at Wembley and I've got to travel down there (a good 2 hours. Might not sound much for you Yanks and Canuks but a pretty good journey for little ole England).
Anyway, that's it for now. Keep tuned for further updates.![Sad :(](./images/smilies/rebel_sad.gif)

Hopefully Rush will be a great distraction. Hang in there!
This is kind of cool. When I've tried to break bad habbits in the past I've done it secretly. I'm thinking now that it would have been easier (or at least I would have tried to be stronger) if there were people who knew what I was up to and were keeping an eye on me, and would know if I showed any lack of strength.
I'm thinking that telling us was a good idea.
On the other hand, this is such a nice bunch of people, if you tell us that you've fallen off the wagon (so to speak), everyone here will just say, "That's okay, we still love you!"![:-D](./images/smilies/003.gif)

that's AWESOME, Slaine! it's good to know you're not just looking out for your family financially (i know some people who sacrifice nice things for their children JUST to light up everyday), you're looking out for your children's health as well. GOOD FOR YOU, i wish you luck!
Elfie, that sounds EXACTLY like something we'd say here!!

Well its been 15 hours now and I've been getting some bad cravings. However, a lot of chewing gum and Chocolate and Caramel milk is getting me through up to yet. I've got the phone number for a support group which I'm going to call. So, wish me luck.

Sorry guys, after all your support, but the quitting smoking has been put on hold for a few days.
I managed to hold out until about 9.30pm (gmt) when, after discussing matters with my wife, we came to the conclusion that I wasn't going to manage this without some sort of 'medical' help (ie NRT).
I think it was the groove I had worn in the kitchen floor where I had been pacing up and down for about 45 minutes. It was then that she gave me some money and told me to take myself down to the late night garage and get some tobacco.
Fear not, though, I have not given up on giving up.
When I get back from London (I'm heading down there tomorrow for the Rush gig) I will be in touch with some of the support groups in my area, as well as my own GP. To put it simply, I'm going to do it properly instead of going off half cocked as I did today.
So, keep an eye here for my next attempt at giving up. I'm convinced that the time is right and, with the proper help and support mechanism, I'm going to do this.
