The real US unemployment rate is 16 percent if persons who have dropped out of the labor pool and those working less than they would like are counted, a Federal Reserve official said Wednesday.

"If one considers the people who would like a job but have stopped looking -- so-called discouraged workers -- and those who are working fewer hours than they want, the unemployment rate would move from the official 9.4 percent to 16 percent, said Atlanta Fed chief Dennis Lockhart.

He underscored that he was expressing his own views, which did "do not necessarily reflect those of my colleagues on the Federal Open Market Committee," the policy-setting body of the central bank.

Lockhart pointed out in a speech to a chamber of commerce in Chattanooga, Tennessee that those two categories of people are not taken into account in the Labor Department's monthly report on the unemployment rate. The official July jobless rate was 9.4 percent.
It all looks to be part of the "immaculate deception" if you ask me.

It will go even higher if you count those that are paid "under the table."

So, WHB, what do you think?
LOS ANGELES ? Spider-Man and his Marvel Entertainment cohorts will join the Walt Disney Company in a $4 billion deal announced early Monday.

Disney said in a statement that it would pay a combination of about 60 percent cash and 40 percent stock to acquire Marvel, which has a stable of some 5,000 characters that includes the X-Men, Fantastic Four, Iron Man, Captain America and Thor.

I didn't see this prior to posting the MSN article in the General area.

I hope Disney doesn't bastardize the Marvel universe.

If I see Shreck vs. Wolverine I will hurt someone.

If I were in charge of the school I'd consider showing it to them, but not live. I'd want to watch it first. No matter who the president is, if he says something partisan then some parents are going to be upset. If it turns out to be an inspirational kind of "The more education you get, the greater you can be!" kind of a speech with nothing partisan in it, go ahead and show it to them. If it turns out to be a recruitng speech for the new youth brigade or something, then don't show it.

He's gotta get 'em YOUNG yaknow.

Today's paper says that teachers are being left to decide whether to show it and parents can opt out. There will be a transcript available on Monday and I am going to read it for sure.
