Threat recedes of F1 Split

The crisis threatening to split Formula One apart receded on Wednesday
after Max Mosley, head of the sport?s governing body, announced he had
reached an agreement with the teams planning a breakaway series and
said he would not be standing for re-election to the job.
The sudden about-turn from the president of the F?d?ration Internationale
de l?Automobile came a day after he lambasted the Formula One Teams
Association (Fota) and indicated he was minded to continue beyond
October, when his term of office expires.
?There will be no split,? Mr Mosley said at an impromptu meeting in Paris
following a FIA World Motorsport Council meeting. ?There will be one
championship in 2010, which is something I think we all hoped for.?
Fota, including Ferrari, McLaren and Brawn GP, had objected to Mr.
Mosley?s plans for a voluntary ?40m budget cap on teams, designed to
end what he called F1?s ?financial arms race?, and a set of rules that
would favour teams staying within the cap. Mr Mosley had greeted the
breakaway threat with a promise to sue for breach of contract.
But in a statement, the FIA said the 2010 rules would be the same as this
year?s, although the teams had agreed to reduce costs to the level of the
early 1990s ? about ?40m.
The FIA received assurances from the teams of its ?permanent and
continuing role? as the sport?s governing body, a position that Mr Mosley
had previously said had been undermined by Fota?s breakaway threat
and apparent demands that he be removed from the presidency.
Fota also committed itself to the F1 series until 2012 and agreed to
renegotiate and extend their contracts before then.
The statement added: ?In view of this new agreement and with the
prospect of a stable future for Formula One, [Mr] Mosley has confirmed
his decision not to stand for re-election in October this year.? No further
details were revealed.
The breakthrough came on Wednesday morning ahead of the FIA council
session, in a two-hour meeting between Mr Mosley and Luca di
Montezemolo, the Ferrari president who has been the FIA president?s
arch-enemy during the crisis. Bernie Ecclestone, F1?s commercial
supremo, was also present.
Mr di Montezemolo said of Mr Mosley at the press conference. ?I think he
has done a very good fix of the problem. When you have reached an
agreement, everyone has to help in the same way.?
Mr Mosley denied the settlement amounted to a climbdown on his part.
He said: ?They [Fota] have got the rules they want and the stability.
We?ve got the new teams in and the cost reduction. So that?s very helpful.
?As far as I?m concerned the teams were always going to get rid of me in
October ? well, they still are. Whether the person who succeeds me will
be more to their liking remains to be seen.?

Don't start none...won't be none.
And the good part of this story? Massa is up walking talking and eating again after his accident- he took a front suspension assembly off the head- broke his helmet and did other gnarly things.CygnusX1 wrote:Schumacher Returns, Fills in for Massa
