The cool thing about Army basic is that they take fat boys like I was and turn them out lean and mean, and the little guys turn out lean and mean also. Same training, same amount of food. Ok, I had to do a lot of extra sit-ups and flutter kicks, (Which they outlawed because of the growing number of back injuries it caused), but it took me from 247 pounds to 190 in 16 weeks. Fort Benning Georgia in the spring and summer had a little something to do with that too.
Yer gonna do fine with the physical part Bear. The mental part...........here's the secret.
It's all in yer head bro.
Keep yer head.
Edited to get the weight correct. not 257.......247. And 190, not 180.

Hairy's right. I lost 45 pounds! It all was worth it too...but:
It took me twenty years to get 'em back.
Seriously, HB is right.
You have to understand that everything you've been accustomed to in life
as being "normal" is going buh-bye.
It all starts when you arrive at boot camp at 3 in the morning.
And you WILL arrive at 3 in the morning...or later.
That is intentional. You will be disoriented and rushed around to
start the process of your new training. It's all planned and proven.
It's all part of the "transformation."
You will eat, sleep and do things their way. Your entire day will be
planned and scheduled. There is no wasted time.
When they give you time off to write or call home - DO IT.
You'll be very busy any other time. Also:
You will be doing much more listening than talking. Learn to listen.
It's something we were never taught in school.
Like my dad told me before I went in...he said:
"Son, keep your mouth shut, do what you're told - and you'll be fine."
You've got the smarts. You'll do very well. I imagine you'll be at the top
of your class.
Don't sweat the small stuff buddy. You're on your way.

Oh SNAP Zep! hahahaha You got a point there!zepboy wrote:Bear, just remember to volunteer for laundry detail. That is the only sure way to get first pick of the decent socks. You're going to need them!
Better let Bear in on this now:
The three people you ALWAYS treat nicely in the military - and not necessarily in this order - are:
1. Medics - They can "conveniently lose" your health/vaccination
records. Not good if you just got those overseas shots!
2. Cooks - NEVER bite the hand that feeds ya, or you'll get
the "chef's special" next time.
3. Personnel People - They can screw life up royally for you if you get on
their wrong side, or they can make it suh-weet if you get in tight
with 'em. They document your military career and handle your LEAVE
and PAY. 'Nuff said about that, right? Right.
If you stay on the good side of those three people, you'll be golden.
Don't start none...won't be none.
Bear is in Seattle right now. He has spent the day testing for the military. I AM SO FREAKIN' PROUD OF HIM!!!! Not only for making the choice to serve his country, but for how he is testing.
On the ASVAB he got the highest score anyone from Port Angeles has ever gotten AND he got the third highest score ever received at the Seattle AFEES!
My boy ROCKS!!!!
He is going Reserves, though, because all the homeschool slots are taken right now. He will go Active when there is an opening.

Dan, Dawn, youse guys did good.
You're living proof that home-schooling WORKS.
I tip my hat to you both. AWESOME!
Let's talk bid'ness!
Okay, so he did great on the tests.
Lets' see what the recruiter can do for him NOW...
Maybe - a sweet promotion right after boot camp?
An advanced specialty school?
That's a sweet bargaining chip Bear has!
Coolness. The oyster with the pearl is opening.
Time to negotiate!
Be aware that, unless he is ordered into INACTIVE Reserve status, he
could be called up on ACTIVE Reserves.
Active Reservists are in-theater as we text and have been for a while.
