I saw Rush at the horse race track in Allentown in 1980. Met them all backstage. It was the last day of the tour, the 4th day in a row, following them around the east coast. After the show, we were standing on the entry-way to this backstage trailer with Geddy and Alex (and a 5 or 6 year old Justin) watching the crew go into this onstage, after show battle, which brought all of the instruments to the ground including the giant gong (what a great sound that made.) My band and I were watching all of this with our heroes and it seemed so surreal. After the mock fight and much laughter, Ged and Al signed some stuff for us, told my bass player where to buy ballerina shoes and went back into the trailer to party with The Pat Travers Band, who opened the show.
Just as we were pondering making our way back to the van in the afterglow of unreality, Neil came trudging from the trailer in a bee-line for his tour bus. So we had to bug him for a few minutes on his way. He was cordial and wished us well and disappeared into the bus.
Just then, our driver/bass player realized that after 4 days travel we were both out of gas and money, in Allentown. We were from a few hundy miles away on the coast, so we were freaked for a moment.
Just then Geddy came out of the trailer with his travel-gig bag and Bassman ran over to him. I heard him say, "Hey man, we've been following you for 4 days and we've run out of gas and money. Do you guys have any spare gas on the buses we could beg from you?"
Geddy looks at him in wonder and says, "No, I don't have any gas, but..." And dug into his pockets. He pulled out a 10 and a 1 and handed them over. We all cheered Geddy and slapped Bassman on the back for being so brave and giving us a story to tell our friends and Rushfreaks for years.
As we were walking from the stage that was nearly broken down by now I saw Larry Allen cleaning up the last of the drumkit. I jogged back over and yelled, "Larry! Here's something for you after the work's done!" And threw 3 joints up to him, of which he caught 1 and picked up the other two. "Thanks, man!" He yelled. I gave him a wave, turned around and started up the path to re-join my group. Then I heard, "Hey, dude!" I swung back around and flying through the air toward me were two Neil drumsticks wrapped in plastic. I thanked him bigtime and ran to our van.
That's my Allentown memory.
