Do you guys remember in the 2006 election cycle when Rep. Mark Foley (R-FL) resigned when it was learned that he liked flirting with pages in IM? All we heard up until the election after that was the phrase "culture of corruption" about the Rerpublicans in congress. Now check out what just happened with Foley's replacement.

From ABC News:
Tim Mahoney Elected to Remove 'Ethical Cloud' of His Disgraced Predecessor, Mark Foley
By EMMA SCHWARTZ, RHONDA SCHWARTZ, and VIC WALTER
Oct. 13, 2008?

West Palm Beach Congressman Tim Mahoney (D-FL), whose predecessor resigned in the wake of a sex scandal, agreed to a $121,000 payment to a former mistress who worked on his staff and was threatening to sue him, according to current and former members of his staff who have been briefed on the settlement, which involved Mahoney and his campaign committee.

Mahoney, who is married, also promised the woman, Patricia Allen, a $50,000 a year job for two years at the agency that handles his campaign advertising, the staffers said.

A Mahoney spokesperson would not answer questions about the alleged affair or the settlement, but said Allen resigned of her own accord and "has not received any special payment from campaign funds."

Senior Democratic leaders in the House of Representatives, including Rep. Rahm Emanuel (D-IL), the chair of the Democratic Caucus, have been working with Mahoney to keep the matter from hurting his re-election campaign, the Mahoney staffers said.
I can believe the culture of corruption charge about congress in general, but no single party has the corner on the market.

kinds reminds me of the saying, "Power corrupts, and absolute power corrupts absolutely."

It's gotta be tough being in a position where you are led to think you can have whatever you want. Being human is a fragile thing, much more so when the power is in your hand.

I'm sure they didn't mind when Foley's chance of continuing in the office was dashed to bits! lol

I really enjoy their iced oatmeal cookies.

I hope they return to work soon.

I curse the reasons behind it all. It's not right.

Home...

My home is burning. Well, not the exact place I grew up, that cabin burnt a few years ago when the people who bought it from my godmother didn't think it was really necessary to clean the stove pipe and after three years of build-up of soot they got out of the house with their lives and nothing more.

This is in the canyon just west of the one I grew up in:

I remember a scene like this from 1975:

Remember the show CHIPs? This is the freeway they used. It is also the road I took to university. They've closed the whole thing.
