DECIDING VOTE IN CONGRESS TODAY!!

Federal law-makers who claim to champion the American worker are once
again showing their true intentions.

While 342,000 Americans lost their jobs in August alone, and with
unemployment at its highest level since 2003, Congress wants to add
550,000 foreign workers to our labor market!

Congress doesn't seem to care that this cheap imported labor pool will
compete directly with the MILLIONS OF AMERICANS who are actively
seeking employment! Congress needs to be made well aware that adding
550,000 additional workers will do more significant harm than good!

What Do You Think?

Sting Nabs Adults Buying Booze For Kids
Reporting
Joe Shortsleeve BOSTON (WBZ) ― Underage drinking is a huge problem. Consider this: Every day in this country, six teenagers die in accidents of all kinds after they have been drinking.

Chief Correspondent Joe Shortsleeve went along with undercover state investigators last Thursday as they cracked down on adults who were buying booze for underage kids.

It was a warm September night, and the college kids were stocking up on 30 packs of cheap beer. Some were 21. Many were not.

On this night, though, in Brighton, they were being watched and stopped by agents from the state's Alcoholic Beverages Control Commission.

Their job: Keep alcohol out of the hands of kids under the age of 21. Ted Mahoney was the lead investigator for the sting operation.

"Do you feel like what you do saves lives?" we asked.

"Absolutely, absolutely," Mahoney replied. "You know the stories you do, where some poor kid gets hurt in a car accident or hurts someone else or ends up falling off a roof -- you see that story and you say, 'How did that happen?' Well, it happened because they got access to the alcohol."

It didn't take long. We had been there a matter of minutes before undercover alcohol investigators were making stops right on the street outside the liquor store.

A few feet from our camera, an agent snared a 23-year-old guy who was buying booze for two 18-year-old girls.

ABCC Investigator Mike Teehan wrote up the citation right on the street corner.

"He gave her the alcohol," Teehan said. "She is 18 years old. He placed the two 30 packs in the back seat. She is 18 years old. She's in possession of it."

"Do you understand what's going on?" we asked the 23-year-old. "You can't be handing off alcohol to 18-year-olds."

"I do now," he said.

Just moments later, right across the street, another agent grabbed a man who, for $20, bought two cases of beer for teens barely old enough to drive.

Mahoney chased the 27-year-old buyer down the street.

"This gentleman purchased the alcohol for these two young men who are just 17 years old," Mahoney said.

In all these cases, the adult buying the booze faces criminal charges in court. The underage kids are not arrested; instead, agents call their parents on the spot and send a letter to their homes.

State Treasurer Tim Cahill oversees enforcements like this. The Alcoholic Beverages Control Commission falls under his office.

"If it saves one life, it is worth it," Cahill said.

The booze -- and there was a lot of it, collected in a very short amount of time -- is tagged as evidence. It filled a large trunk of a state vehicle.

When the operation at that one location was over, in a matter of hours, agents charged 32 adults with buying alcohol for kids.

Not to mention the large blowout held at State police barracks after the sting...

I have a "Aunt" on the wife's side that bought her kids alcohol as teens so
they wouldn't "run the streets" and "get into trouble buying it on the sly"..

Well, it worked, but they became full-blown alcoholics in their 20's, all
from the comfort of home...

Did it work in the end? No.

I realize it's almost a right of passage to drink underage, and I did it too,
but thank GOD I caught myself.

Zippy chance of me buying it for kids though...as if. :x

Yeah, I'm not losing my freedom just to help someone get stupid. At my age I have enough trouble finding time to "stupid" myself :-)

for a small break from election typee news. I am getting sick and tired of the "canadian soldier >name< killed in combat today" headlines. I have nothing but the utmost repsect for these men and or women just a few things that bother me.

Firstly each one talks about the war being too costly, some even go so far as to include surveys like "52% of people think war is too highly priced and canada should not be involved" followed by something like survey size = 1000 people. Not to mention as far as I know (asked my friend in the reserves) any canadian soldier out there, has volunteered to ship out. They chose to go there to fight with the intent and ideology that they are there to improve or maintain our quality of life. By broadcasting every death and whining it costs too much, while they were doing what they wanted ( no different than any other soldier mind you) you are turning a honouring of their death into a scapegoat.

Secondly while naming every soldier is good and well, most people don't know them anyway, it is just another ploy to incite more feeling. All the soldiers are heroes live or dead, and I do not think the dead should be giving more honour than the still living. They all fought hard. For that reason I support the nameless soldier as I believe it shows a less bias, more equal honour to all who fought.

I needed to rant to get this out of my system, sorry if anyone does not like what they hear, i figured this was the best place to do it either way.

Right on Myg, and on behalf of many grateful Americans I appreciate the
sacrifices our Canadian brothers and sisters have made - not for the
cause of war - but for the cause of our mutual freedom.

Awesome, Cyg, Zep and Mygh, Elf and Hairball. I'm with ya too. Still, the families of the fallen want them to get a bit of recognition and there may be no better way. I'm not sure.

Someone just gave my little alter-ego a spicy Slim Jim, though and he wants to say something:

It's possible that they name the Canadian soldiers that die and make a big deal out of it up there because there are about 250 people in the military. It's really just a ratio thing. :-)

And ye in the Great White North don't have to worry about paying for it. We don't seem to mind shelling out $275 million per day (That adds up to $4100 per household, btw.) and we're still having a glorious time in our 3 trillion dollars war. :-)
