Black Bear Sightings on Rise in VA

Black bear sightings are very common in state this time of year

Date published: 6/4/2008

By DAN TELVOCK

Dan Chapman says his Golden Retriever is "held hostage" in the house.

The bird feeder is now indoors, along with the dog's food. Trash has been
removed from the backyard.

Chapman is not preparing for a big storm.

He is, however, prepared for another bear sighting.

Chapman and his wife, Jeanne, spotted a black bear in their backyard
Monday night in Chapel Hills subdivision of northwestern Spotsylvania
County. He said Jeanne rushed inside at about 6:30 p.m. "with the
excitement of seeing a black bear."

"I've lived here 34 years and I've never seen a bear in my yard," he
said. "I can't let my dog out of the house because if she picks up the
scent and sees the bear, she's gone."

Todd Mitchell, who lives near Chapman off of Spotswood Furnace and Elys
Ford roads, wrote in an e-mail that his kids were playing in the backyard
when they saw "something black and moving fast in the woods."

"A bit unnerving," he wrote.

According to the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries, this is
the time of year when most bear sightings are reported. The newspaper
received reports of at least four separate bear sightings in two days.

Mike Dye, district wildlife biologist, said cubs are adventurous this time of
year.

"They are either out causing trouble or are trying to find new home
ranges," he said. "Another aspect is they are just trying to find food, and
trash and birdseed are a very good source of high-calorie food."

Dye said there is no reason for homeowners to fear black bears.

"But at the same time, use common sense. Don't try to approach the
bear. Bang pots together. The air horns work great to scare them off," he
said.

WHAT TO DO?

If you see a Black bear in your neighborhood:

1. Take down bird feeders, remove garbage and pet food, and clean
grills for at least two weeks.

2. Do not put meat scraps or any other strong-smelling food in the
compost pile. Consider an enclosed compost bin.

3. Remove ripe fruit from fruit trees and surrounding grounds.

4. Consider installing electric fencing to protect beehives, dumpsters,
gardens, compost piles or other potential food sources.

5. Bring pets inside. Children shouldn't play outside without
supervision.

6. Do not try to chase or approach the bear. Crash pots together to
scare it away if necessary.

7. Make sure neighbors and homeowners associations are aware of the
bear and these tips.

LIVING WITH BEARS

The Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries made a 19-minute
video on black bears in Virginia and how to respond if one is seen in your
neighborhood. You can view the video here:

The only reason I'll clean mine is for GRILLED BLACK BEAR.

I heard one "snort" me a couple of weeks ago coming back from the
chicken pens...it was pretty loud. Much louder than a buck would snort.

Thats why I like the Northeast better, the only thing we have to watch is Kennedys driving their cars into the water.

WASHINGTON - President Bush's former spokesman, Scott McClellan, will testify before a House committee next week about whether Vice President Dick Cheney ordered him to make misleading public statements about the leaking of CIA agent Valerie Plame's identity.
What the crap? This case was solved ages ago when the leaker confessed! His name is Richard Armitage! He CONFESSED! Case closed! Why are we wasting time and money on this?

I was listening to NPR and McClellan was on for an hour discussing this. He has a new book about his years as Whitehouse spokesman. Very illuminating to learn actual inside info from an inside mofo. It's called "What Happened: Inside the Bush White House and Washington's Culture of Deception"

You may not want to poo-poo this until you've read what's what. Also, just because things seem zipped up it doesn't mean they are air-tight :-)

'Cuz somebody BESIDES R.A. has to be the "sacrifical lamb" and
take the fall/jail time for the new "Tricky Dick." I could be wrong, but that's usually how it works.

As the White House Press Secretary, Scott Mclellan was responsible for the releases. If he released something he didn't believe to be the truth, then his integrity is what should be called into question, not that of the administration.

That's my two cents.

Not to mention that the press secretary is not present in the meetings that Scott seems to be giving insider information on...

He explained briefly in the interview, and goes into it at length in the book, that he was not responsible for some of the answers he was forced to give to reporters, hence the title segment, "culture of deception." As in all governments, no matter who you are, you can't just "tell the truth" even if you want to.
Again, how can this point be debated unless the meat of the book or even the words from the man himself (via the live interview) have been digested? Unless you know what he has to say, hypothesizing on things we know nothing about seems futile, if not reactionary.

It's wild how someone from this deceptive, manipulative, mafia-like administration ('Ay, buddy. Sorry to shoot you in da face, but your wife disrespected me :-D ) can suddenly, without facts or even dialog, be the villain. One fact is, when he realized that his integrity was at stake in every press conference (due to the fact that he had to hedge most every "negative" question from the press,) he exited and wrote his experiences for all to read.

I guess it's way too much to expect any hard-line conservative to approach this issue with balance and fairness. After all, that's how these problems get started and continue in the first place. "Whatever the Republican/Conservative party says is gospel! Anyone who speaks out against is a liar and is somehow just trying to raise taxes on the sainted rich in big business. :-D "

Nah, I'm just playing around, acting like a sarcastic Jon Stewart. But eerily, some of this kind of stuff is steeped in "truthiness."

P.S. I direct this at nobody. Just trying to get back into the groove of flinging out the opinion without just laying down in surrender....plus I think I'm right Image

Media Ignore Impending Collision:
Gay Rights vs. Religious Liberty
By Brian Fitzpatrick

Thank God for the alternative media.

Unlike the big newspapers and TV networks, small conservative online
news sites are reporting the growing threat posed to religious liberty by
the burgeoning homosexual rights movement.

Two indispensable Web sites, Canada?s Life Site News and America?s One
News Now, have carried a stunning series of articles in the past few days
about critics of homosexuality being attacked by the governments of
Great Britain, Northern Ireland, Belgium and Canada.

"Britain's Cardinal Cormac Murphy-O'Connor Will Defy Law Forcing Homosexual Adoption"

"Northern Ireland MP Investigated for "Homophobic" Remarks"

"Belgian Bishop Cleared of Charges for Church Teaching on
Homosexuality"

No country is harder on religious believers than Canada, where a
modern-day "star chamber" called the Canadian Human Rights
Commission
is cracking down on Christian preachers who dare to
repeat what the Bible says about homosexuality.

"Alberta Pastor Fined $7000 and Ordered to Publicly Apologize and
Remain Silent on Homosexuality"

"Canadian Catholic Priest Accused of Hate Crime"

The homosexual rights movement is not really an effort to win civil rights
for a supposedly oppressed minority. It?s a war against Western
civilization?s Judeo-Christian moral order, joined now by many non-
homosexuals who support rewriting society?s moral code. The goals are
to win social acceptance of alternative sexual ?lifestyles,? especially
homosexuality, and to make room for a revolutionary new sexual code
that glorifies self-indulgence and embraces promiscuity.

Hedonism and homosexuality cannot be legitimized without displacing the
Bible?s restrictions on sex and God?s design for the family. The
revolutionaries are going about it the obvious way, in our litigious
society?through the courts.

By redefining traditional sexual morality as bigotry, the sexual
revolutionaries are using the law to assail the rights of speech,
association and religion of anyone who disagrees with them. Using ?sexual
orientation? statutes and hate crimes laws, they are attempting to silence
anybody who believes that homosexuality is a sin, not an acceptable
alternative ?lifestyle.?

A Canadian Catholic magazine editor, Father Alphonse de Valk, warns in
his editorial, ?Fascism Has Come to Canada?:

So we move from [former Canadian Prime Minister] Trudeau?s 1967
slogan ?there is no place for the state in the bedrooms of the nation? ?
falsely used to destroy traditional morality ? to the new slogan that the
state will determine people?s moral thinking.

Why aren?t the liberal newspapers and broadcasters reporting these
stories? As politically savvy secular institutions that back homosexual
rights, they may be reluctant to publicize religious victims of the
movement. They appear to be following in the footsteps of Walter
Duranty, the New York Times foreign correspondent who won the Pulitzer
Prize for his coverage of Stalin?s Soviet Union.

In the 1930s, Duranty downplayed the realities of the Soviet gulag, where
10 million or more people died. He lied about Stalin?s deliberate
starvation of millions of people in the Ukraine. Even though his
deliberate misreporting has been thoroughly documented, the Times has
never removed Duranty from its list of staff who have won Pulitzers.

Nor has the Pulitzer committee withdrawn the award.

For Duranty, loyalty to political ideals trumped journalistic ethics. Rather
than expose Stalin, Duranty defended him: ?You can?t make an omelette
without breaking a few eggs.?

The current journalistic cover-up of the homosexual activist movement?s
assaults on freedom is not the same in degree as covering up the Gulag,
but it?s the same in kind. It is an abdication of responsibility and a
professional disgrace. And it is one more reason that alternative media
that report honestly are rapidly growing.
Don't start none...won't be none.

If it makes someone happy, why do I care? If a male wants to live with another male, and it makes him happy, why should I care?

Jeez people this isn't the dark ages!
