Wow.. it is hard putting this book down. What an adventure. I know he lost his family, but it would be so nice to just set out and leave the world behind. Many people find themselves in his situation but do not have the means to just get away.. It would be so nice just to hit the road, sleep when you are tired, eat when you are hungry, drink when you are thirsty. without a care in the world..

Well, I have to tell you guys.. I am not so sure I am impressed with this book.. it seems kind of foolish riding a motorcycle around the Artic Circle trying to find yourself... but thats just me.. I know he went through a bad time, but I doubt he was the first or will be the last.. most people who go through this have to continue on with their lives and don't have the luxury to do what he did, much less write a book about it. just my opinion.. I shall read on though as he is a pretty good writer.. and I wish I had the luxury to do what he did, I guess I can live my dream through his book, cept the part about riding a motorcycle through the Artic. that is just silly..

I do agree, though, that most of us have to handle our grief in other ways, and can't just go off and find ourselves like he did. But, he could do that and I think others of us would if we were able. I also think he would have rather not be so alone that he could do it.

don't you think it was kind of selfish of him in regards to his family and friends to go off on such a dangerous excursion? without anybody else? in his state of mind.. I wondered how many of his friends or family wondered if they would ever see him alive again. From what I have read he seems kind of selfish and does not like to be bothered by people.. Maybe I am missing something... some of what he wrote was kind of mean too, like he was blaming the kid for him putting diesel fuel in his gas tank, or the wallowing middle age hippos around the buffet table..

Fact is, Neil is human and therefore very imperfect.
Selfish? Yes, he was in many ways acting quite selfishly. He had great trouble handling all he experienced and he didn't handle it all well. He was grouchy and grumpy and negative and looked down on people and all that.
I can't say that I would handle things any better, but I hope I would. I've got my own baggage and I deal with it well at times and not well at all at others.
I do appreciate that Neil tells us all these things and doesn't paint a perfect picture of himself.
