I gave a presentation on jazz to some of the students here and decided to videotape me and a couple other teachers playing something with a straight feel, then with swung feel to demonstrate the difference. The song I chose to do was "Band on the Run" by Paul McCartney.

I picked that song because it has a nice melody line and I thought the chord progression would be easy to work with (I'm still a newbie on this theory stuff...I know enough to be stupid). I also picked the song because, rhythmically, it floats between a straight and swung feel anyway, so I thought we could easily exaggerate the feels for illustritive purposes.
After recording a straight-feel version and a swung-feel version, the funk took over and we asked ourselves how would James Brown do this song. Actually in listening to it, I find that Matt (the guitarist) and I are laying down a far busier kind of funk than the Godfather of Soul would ever have tolorated.
Hope it works for you guys.
